Dive with Seals at Montague Island Marine Reserve, Narooma

Narooma Travel guru Catriona Rowntree once described Montague Island as “a nightmare to film because every aspect is so good”. The Southern New South Wales island has twice been voted Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination and gained membership of NSW Tourism’s Hall of Fame in 2008 for winning three consecutive ecotourism awards.

What you will see

Home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, Montague Island is a breeding ground for around 15 bird species – while dolphins, whales and endangered Grey Nurse Sharks can all be seen at various times of year. Most of the seals are at a depth of 3 – 15m, which provides a great dive experience for all dive levels.

We head out on the boat to dive Montague Island on Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning. After a 25 minute boat ride we will arrive at the island where the seals can be found. Between the dives you will have the chance to warm up with hot soup before jumping in for the second dive.

• You may also see Grey Nurse Sharks, Manta Rays, Kingfish, dolphins, trevally, turtles and more
• Afternoon free time for plenty of sightseeing or simply relaxing

• During cooler months dive with up to 1,800 very friendly and playful Fur Seals. Or maybe witness one of nature’s brilliant Humpback whales or the spectacle of a pod of dolphins
• During warm months, currents up to 26 degrees bring a mass of tropical fish and pelagics as well as the nutrients that feed the coral, nudibranchs, giant tube worms and gorgonea fans
• From February also witness Grey Nurse sharks, occasional turtle, manta or sunfish plus hordes of kingfish, trevally and hosts of other reef species

Pre-requisite:

• Minimum Open Water Diver with 15 logged dives
