PADI Instructor Development Course Sydney

A PADI Divemaster is the usual pathway into the Instructor Development Course. However, if you hold a qualifying leadership-level certification from another recognised diver training organisation, you may also be eligible to enrol in a PADI IDC.

You need a minimum of 60 logged dives to begin your PADI Instructor Development Course and at least 100 logged dives to attend the PADI Instructor Examination.

It’s worth remembering that meeting the minimum number of dives doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ready for instructor training. Having broad diving experience and being comfortable in different environments will make your IDC experience considerably more valuable.

The Dive Centre Manly IDC is an intensive program delivered over approximately 10 days with evening assignments, with additional preparation and independent study completed before the course.

Your program includes classroom workshops, confined-water training, open-water teaching presentations, skill development, dive theory, PADI Standards and instructor-development sessions.

We provide a sample schedule with each IDC so you can see how the program is structured before enrolling.

Our Instructor Development Courses are based in Manly on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

We have a dedicated Diver Training Centre with classrooms and our own heated training pool, allowing us to conduct the academic and confined-water components of your instructor training in a dedicated training environment.

Open-water components are conducted at suitable Sydney dive sites, with the exact location determined by conditions and training requirements.

Sydney is an excellent environment in which to develop as a dive professional because you’re learning in a genuine temperate-water diving environment rather than only experiencing warm, tropical conditions.

You’ll gain experience dealing with changing ocean conditions, shore diving, local marine environments and the practical considerations involved in teaching divers in real-world conditions.

At Dive Centre Manly, you also have access to an established, operational dive centre where diver education takes place every week – from entry-level programs through to professional and technical training.

Becoming an Instructor is about much more than passing an examination. We want you to leave your IDC with the confidence and practical skills required to actually work as a dive professional.

Dive Centre Manly is an established PADI 5 Star Instructor Development facility with a dedicated Diver Training Centre, heated pool, classrooms, experienced instructional team and access to some of Sydney’s best-known shore diving.

Our history in the Manly diving community stretches back decades, and today we operate across recreational training, professional development, technical diving, equipment sales and servicing, guided diving, conservation, Dive Club activities and dive travel.

That means your Instructor Development takes place within a working dive centre and active diving community.

Your IDC is delivered by our Instructor Development Team, led by a PADI Course Director and supported by experienced PADI Instructor-level professionals.

You’ll get to know the team before your IDC begins and work closely with them throughout your training.

We believe the relationship with your Instructor Development Team shouldn’t finish when you complete the IE. We’re here to support your continued development as you gain experience as a new PADI Instructor.

Preparation makes a huge difference to your IDC experience.

Before arriving, you should complete the required PADI online learning and pre-course work, refresh your dive theory and make sure you’re comfortable demonstrating core scuba skills.

We’ll provide information before the course explaining what needs to be completed and how you can best prepare.

The goal is to arrive ready to focus on becoming a great instructor rather than spending your IDC relearning material you could have reviewed beforehand.

The IE is designed to confirm that you have reached the standard required to become a PADI Instructor.

It is normal to feel nervous about it, but your IDC is specifically designed to prepare you for the different components you’ll encounter.

Rather than simply trying to teach you how to “pass the IE”, our focus is on developing your understanding and teaching ability so that you’re prepared for both the examination and life afterwards as an Instructor.

Not successfully completing one component doesn’t necessarily mean the end of your Instructor journey.

There are procedures for candidates who need to repeat sections of an Instructor Examination, depending on the component and circumstances.

Your Instructor Development Team will explain the IE process before you attend so you understand exactly what to expect.

Yes. You need to hold the appropriate CPR and First Aid instructor-level qualification before you can meet the requirements to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

If you’re not already an Emergency First Response Instructor, this can be incorporated into your Instructor Development training pathway.

Your inclusions depend on the IDC package you choose. We offer different Instructor Development options depending on how much training, support and continuing education you want to include.

Absolutely. You don’t need to have completed your PADI Divemaster with Dive Centre Manly to join one of our IDCs.

Before the course, we’ll review your certifications and experience and help identify any areas you may want to refresh before beginning your Instructor training.

Sydney provides an opportunity to complete your Instructor Development training while experiencing Australian diving and one of the world’s most recognised cities. If you’re travelling to Sydney specifically for your IDC, speak to us before booking flights or accommodation so we can provide the complete course and Instructor Examination schedule.

Candidates are responsible for ensuring they have the appropriate visa and permission for their intended activities while in Australia.

After successfully completing the IDC, passing your PADI Instructor Examination and meeting PADI’s remaining membership requirements, you’ll be able to earn your PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor rating.

This opens opportunities to work with PADI Dive Centres and Resorts in Australia and around the world.

Becoming qualified is only the beginning, though. Developing experience, gaining additional Instructor ratings and learning how a successful dive operation works can make a significant difference when applying for Instructor positions.
